SUMMARY:18-26 Sept - Climate Coalition’s ‘Great Big Green Week‘
DESCRIPTION:18-26 September: the Climate Coalition’s ‘Great Big Green Week‘ \nCommunities across the UK will join together for the ‘Great Big Green Week’.  It aims to be the biggest event for climate and nature ever held in the UK\, taking place just five weeks before COP26 is held in Glasgow.  There are plans for a Great Big Green Week in Cheshire West and Chester\, to raise the profile of groups taking action on climate change and to encourage more\, from communities and politicians alike. \nThe ‘Great Big Green Week’ will link up with some existing events\, such as the annual Chester Zoo Wildlife Connections on 18 &19 September.  The Sustainable Chester Fair is being planned the following weekend in Grosvenor Park.  Northwich will have art installations around the town\, and more. \nCWDF would like to hold an event of our own\, and is open to suggestions from members – contact us by email at chester1wdf@gmail.com.  We might\, for example\, lobby at local branches of the major banks that are still heavily involved in financing fossil fuel projects and driving global warming\, even though their stated investment policies have branded such activities as “unsustainable”. \nIf you’d like to be involved in our local ‘Great Big Green Week’ or want more information\, please send an email to helenchesterfoe@hotmail.com.

SUMMARY:God Treads Softly Here
DESCRIPTION:‘God Treads Softly Here: You do not Hear Her Coming’ \nAn evening of words and music for Christian Aid \nTrevor Dennis\, Brian Heald and Lionel Clarke\, \nSt Mary’s Handbridge\, Wednesday\, September 15\, 7.30pm – 9.00pm \n  \nThis is the fourth and last in a series of evenings of words and music that have been held in St Mary’s Church\, Handbridge for Christian Aid since the middle of last December. We’ve had evenings to do with Christmastide\, Passiontide\, and Women’s voices in the Bible. This time the theme is simply God! \nTrevor Dennis will read six of his published stories or poems on that theme\, while Lionel Clarke and Brian Heald\, two highly celebrated Chester musicians\, will be playing six pieces for cello and piano. The mood will be less sombre this time – it will be quietly reflective at times\, at others positively playful. And Trevor assures everyone that this programme will easily fit within the 90 minutes. \nWe will find ourselves at the gate of heaven\, on the bank of one of the rivers of Eden\, in the silence of the Sinai desert\, or with the marks of God’s floury hands on our backs. And there will be Dvŏrák\, Rachmaninoff\, Schubert\, Bach and more. \nThanks to the Methodist Book Centre at Hanley\, and their wonderful manager Julie-Ann Ellis\, there will be a bookstall and at the end of the evening a chance to buy copies of some of Trevor’s books\, including three of the collections he will have been drawing upon.  Julie has promised to donate 10% of the profits to Christian Aid. \nNo tickets are being sold\, but as before there will be a chance to give to Christian Aid\, either in the church or online. Astonishingly\, the first three evenings between them raised £8\,850. Let’s see if we can bring the grand total to over £10\,000! The need is so great\, and so urgent. \nIf you wish to reserve seats in the church\, please email Trevor on trevordennis11@gmail.com \, or telephone him on 01244 638441. You will be more than welcome.  If you prefer\, you can watch the evening on Zoom\, or catch up with it afterwards on the St Mary’s Handbridge YouTube channel\, and you will be given a link to an online-giving page\, set up by the Chester Christian Aid Committee. Cheques made out to Christian Aid can be posted to ‘Christian Aid\, c/o The Parish Administrator\, St Mary-Without-the Walls\, Overleigh Road\, Handbridge\, Chester CH4 7HL’. \nTrevor Dennis

SUMMARY:Mon 7th June – CWDF “Extra”:  TED Zoom talk & discussion “How Africa can keep rising”
DESCRIPTION:Mon 7th June – CWDF “Extra”:  TED Zoom talk & discussion “How Africa can keep rising” \n7.00 – 9.00pm.  A TED talk is a short video created from a presentation at the main TED (technology\, entertainment\, design) conference or one of its many satellite events around the world. Listening to/watching a TED talk gives us the opportunity to hear expert leaders who communicate effectively\, concisely and with passion for their subject. \nFor this CWDF “Extra” session we have selected this talk as a stimulus for discussion: ‘How Africa can keep rising’ given by Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala in 2016. She is a Nigerian-American\, a respected global economist and international development expert who took up her post as Director-General of the World Trade Organisation on 1st March 2021 –  the first woman and first African to hold the office. \nFor the Zoom link email bernard.payne691@btinternet.com
